Prostate Care
Prostate health is a critical concern for men, especially as they age. Conditions like prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) are common but manageable with the right care. We provide comprehensive prostate care services, from screening and diagnosis to advanced treatment options. Our goal is to offer personalised, compassionate care, helping men maintain their health and quality of life.
Prostate Cancer Screening and Diagnosis
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men. Early detection is key to effective treatment, which is why regular screening is recommended for men over the age of 50—or earlier for those with risk factors like a family history of prostate cancer.
Our screening process includes:
- PSA Test (Prostate-Specific Antigen): This blood test measures PSA levels, which can be elevated in men with prostate cancer, though it can also indicate other prostate conditions like BPH or infections.
- Digital Rectal Exam (DRE): During this exam, your urologist will manually check for abnormalities in the prostate, such as lumps or hard areas.
If screening results suggest a concern, further diagnostic testing such as imaging or a prostate biopsy may be recommended. Early detection allows for a wider range of treatment options and better outcomes.
Prostate Biopsy
A prostate biopsy is a diagnostic procedure used to confirm the presence of prostate cancer. It is typically recommended when PSA levels are elevated or abnormalities are detected during a DRE.
What to Expect During a Prostate Biopsy:
- A small portion of prostate tissue is taken using a thin needle, either through the rectum or the perineum.
- The procedure is done under local anaesthesia and is usually quick, with minimal discomfort.
- The sample is sent to a laboratory where it is examined for cancer cells.
We will guide you through the biopsy process, explaining each step, and will provide personalized care based on the results.
Active Surveillance
For men with low-risk or slow-growing prostate cancer, active surveillance may be a recommended approach. Instead of immediate treatment, this option involves closely monitoring the cancer with regular check-ups, including PSA tests, DREs, and biopsies.
Why Active Surveillance?
- Prostate cancer often grows slowly, and in some cases, it may never cause symptoms or become life-threatening.
- By delaying or avoiding treatment, patients can prevent potential side effects from surgery or radiation.
If there are signs the cancer is progressing, we will discuss additional treatment options at that time. Active surveillance allows many men to maintain their quality of life without the risks associated with aggressive treatment.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) Treatment
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, or BPH, is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. This condition is common as men age and can lead to urinary symptoms such as frequent urination, weak urine flow, or difficulty starting and stopping urination.
Treatment options for BPH include:
- Medications: Alpha-blockers and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors can help relax the prostate muscles or reduce its size, improving urine flow.
- Minimally Invasive Procedures: Treatments like Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) or laser therapy remove or shrink excess prostate tissue, alleviating symptoms.
- Lifestyle Changes: Some men benefit from managing symptoms with dietary changes, fluid management, and regular monitoring by their healthcare provider.
We work with each patient to determine the best treatment plan, focusing on relieving symptoms and improving quality of life.
Hormonal Therapy for Prostate Cancer
Hormonal therapy is often used to treat prostate cancer that has spread or is at high risk of migrating further. This therapy, also called androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), works by lowering testosterone levels or blocking its effects on prostate cancer cells, as testosterone fuels prostate cancer growth.
Hormonal therapy options include:
- Medications: These drugs either stop the body from producing testosterone or prevent the hormone from reaching cancer cells.
- Surgical Options: In some cases, surgical removal of the testicles (orchiectomy) is considered to rapidly reduce testosterone levels.
Hormonal therapy can be used on its own or in combination with other treatments, such as radiation or chemotherapy, depending on the stage and aggressiveness of the cancer.
